There really is nothing quite like a pohutukawa in full bloom.
This native New Zealand tree is part of the Metrosideros genus, meaning “iron-hearted”, due to its exceptionally hard timber and red colouring. It holds a special place in Maori history and is often used for tools and boat building. Whilst beautiful, the iconic Pohutukawa – the New Zealand Christmas tree – requires regular specialised tree care maintenance.
The A1 Sure Services team are passionate about Pohutukawa tree care and, given the size and often precarious locations of this coastal native, it is wise to seek an expert’s consultation.
Pohutukawa on private land in the urban environment often requires Resource Consent from the Auckland City Council, before any pruning work or tree removal can take place.
The A1 Sure Services tree care team will advise and assist with the Resource Consent process. We have considerable experience in this space and in dealing with the Council.
Excellent customer service and delivering flawless results are our priorities. Additionally, we place safety and efficiency at the forefront of all of our jobs. This is why we use state-of-the-art equipment to handle trees of all sizes, ages and conditions.
If you have Pohutukawa trees on your property which require trimming, pruning or removal, make sure to get in touch with us – contact A1 Sure Services today to schedule your service and experience the difference for yourself.
Often, yes. Many pohutukawa in Auckland are protected or sit in coastal and heritage zones where any pruning or removal needs Resource Consent. We check the rules for your address and help with the application.
After flowering, from late summer through autumn, so you do not lose next season's display. Dangerous limbs are dealt with whenever they are found.
It can be shaped and thinned, but heavy topping damages the tree and is rarely allowed on a protected one. We will show you what a sensible reduction looks like at the free inspection.
Yes. Coastal pohutukawa in awkward positions are a large part of what we do. We rope in, work from the tree and lower everything out rather than dropping it.
Only with the right consent if it is protected, and only where there is a genuine reason - dead, dying or dangerous. We will be straight with you about whether a removal is likely to be approved.

We had 3 large palms cut down in our garden, all in very tight spaces. George and the team at A1 Sure Services did an excellent job. They did a thoroughly professional job in trying weather conditions. Their pricing was very competitive.
The team at A1 arrived on time and did a great job removing a large gum tree at the front of my house. They managed to carefully dismantle it without any damage to my property and they left the place spotless.
I’m really impressed with their tree trimming service. The team was incredibly hard working, using excellent technology to safely take down a large tree in difficult locations. They were professional, efficient, and reasonably priced.
We had two large Phoenix Palms that needed trimming. The communication was so prompt. The boys turned up on time and were very polite, friendly and told me exactly what they were going to do. They cleaned up brilliantly, over and above what I expected. Not to mention, they were one of the lowest quotes we received.
I highly recommend this company for any tree/hedge work you need doing. They did an excellent job on our overgrown hedge and we use them regularly - prompt, tidy, competitively priced and good customer service.
Brilliant service - really impressed with price quoted and follow up service. Would be best tree removal contractor that we have used in over 20 years.
